History of
Berwick Museum and Art Gallery

Founded in 1867 by members of the Berwickshire Naturalists Club the Museum was, by the 1880s, set up in Marygate near the Town Hall.

During the 1940s Sir William Burrell transformed the collection by donating 42 paintings and 300 items of applied art of international significance.

The Museum moved to the Barracks in 1985. Berwick Barracks, are the first purpose built barracks in Britain (since the Roman occupation). Designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, the were built between 1717 and 1721. The Clock Block in which Berwick Museum is situated was added in 1739.
